Kelunding
on the other hand, was a project of passion.Written
graffiti has always been a “thing”withme. It’s just so visceral and
straight to the point. Curating gaveme a real sense of te times that
we live in.
What are youdoingwithyourself nowadays?
At themoment, I amfinishingmy newbook, which is a semi-
fictional tale of a boy’s search for his place in theworld. I hope to
get this out by the end of the year. I amalsoworking on a fewmore
projects like a graphic novel and a short documentary.
However, most of my days are spent atmy shop, painting figures
andmaking sure the business pays the bills.
What do youdo to relax?
It is said that “necessity is themother of invention” and I do a lot of
thinking about ways tomake endsmeet and about the different
things that I could try doing. I find it helpsme actually alleviate
the daily pressure of financial commitments. Sowhen I amrun-
ning around playingmusic, or writing stuff down or even thinking
about things to do, I amrelaxing.
What’s next for you?
Musically, it will be a series of shows to promote the album. At
the end of the day, once the creative part of makingmusic is over,
you are only a CD sales person selling his CDs. I used to not bother
about the sale of my CD’s but honestly, these sales can finance
other projectsmy idlemind comes upwith.
But what’s next generally? I dunno, but I’ll be damned if I amnot
already excited.
I have toknow, why are you called ‘Wolf ’?
(Laughs) The answer to that sir, ismy last bastion of privacy left.
I didn’t really practice and this was evenmore evident whenmy
younger brother could breeze through the opening riff from
La
Bamba
while I could only do the opening chords for
Smoke on The
Water
.
I would sit at Popular Bookstore or the roadsidemagazine
stands and flip themusicmagazines, while slowly writing songs
to play.
Whybusking?
Well, I think it’s a legitimateway tomake a little bit of extra
money. In fact,my latest album,
The Surrogate Friend
was funded
frommonies I collected frompaid shows andmy tips from
busking.
I enjoy busking because I can just play what I want when I
want and at the end of the session I may have somemoney for
a
limau ais
.Make nomistake, it is still work. You still play what
peoplewant to hear because that helps with the tips box. There is
absolutely no glamour involved, it is just work.
Youhave alsowritten twobooks. Tellme about them
andwhat inspiredyou towrite them?
I releasedmy first official book in 2013, called
Social Carbon Copy
,
whichwas followed by theMalay translation of the book a year
later. In 2015, I curatedmy first photography book called
Kelunding
,
which showcases written graffiti onwalls in the Klang Valley.
The first book is a rock-o-journal aboutmy band’s disastrous
attempt to tour Australia and the subsequent Thai tour a year
later. I wrote it just so I did not have to explain to peoplewhat
happened those few years. It was also a great way tomove on from
events that conspired in the book.
Wolf feels that busking is a legitimate
way tomake some extramoney.
Most of his days are spent at his shop,
painting figures andmaking sure that
the bills are paid.
