Delights
Wander the streets of
Singapore and you will often
be pleasantly surprised at
the gems that you come
across. Reuben Miranda
wanders along one such
street on a lazy Saturday
afternoon, eats too much
and spends a very pleasant
hour in a toy museum
reliving his youth.
The Raffles Hotel is also home to the
Raffles Hotel Shopping Arcade. There are
wonderful boutique brands here and if you
are looking for bespoke tailors or luxury
independent designers, the shopping
arcadewill definitely not disappoint.

Street in Singapore
is a narrow street which
houses a range of eclectic
eateries.Walking fromone
end of this street to the other
takesmereminutes, but there is a lot
packed into this stretch of road. There are
numerous pubs and restaurants that are
housed in old shophouses, ensuring that
one does not go hungry or thirsty.
Home of theSling
The Raffles Hotel is amajestic building
and just walking into the courtyard trans-
ports you back in time. This is, of course,
the home of theworld famous Singapore
Sling. This drink, widely regarded as the
national drink of the country, was first
created in 1915 at Raffles Singapore by
bartender NgiamTong Boon. Primarily
a gin-based cocktail, the Singapore Sling
also contains pineapple juice as themain
ingredient, alongwith grenadine, lime
juice andDomBenedictine.
Following the turn of the century in
colonial Singapore, Raffles Singaporewas
the gathering place for the community
and Long Bar was thewatering hole.
Unfortunately for the ladies, etiquette
dictated they could not consume alcohol
in public, and for the sake of public
modesty, fruit juices and teas were their
preferred beverage.
Ngiamsawa niche in themarket and
decided to create a cocktail that looked
like a fruit juice, but whichwas actu-
ally infusedwith gin and other liqueurs.
Masking it in pink gave it a feminine flair
and together with the use of clear alcohol,
he cleverly led people into thinking it was
a socially acceptable punch for the ladies.
With that, the Singapore Slingwas born.
The hotel is also home to the Raffles
Hotel Shopping Arcade. There arewon-
derful boutique brands here and if you
are looking for bespoke tailors or luxury
independent designers, the shopping
arcadewill definitely not disappoint. The
fine architecture certainly adds to the rich
experience of shopping here.
