TheDesign
The new iPhone boasts veryminor design
updates of last year’s iPhone 6S. There
is no glaring difference except for the
antenna lines on the rear of the 6S, which
have been removed. The phone still comes
in the existing gold, silver and rose gold
colour schemes - except for the Space
Grey optionwhich has been replacedwith
Black (matt) and Jet Black.
The exterior ismade out of the same
tough Series 7000 aluminiumbut IP67
dust andwater resistance have been
added, whichmeans the phone can
survive being fully submerged inwater
for up to 30minutes. User’s love-hate
relationshipwith the home button has
been eliminated now that a fixed touch
sensitive surfacewith haptic feedback has
taken its place.
TheCamera
The iPhone 7 uses the same 12-mega-
pixel camera like the iPhone 6s, but what
makes it better this time is its aperture
of f/1.8, which optimises low-light
performance. Optical image stabilisation
has also been added to increase picture
quality taken in less than ideal conditions.
The front FaceTimeHD camera has also
been upgraded to a 7-megapixel with
quad-LED flash that takes better quality
selfies.
TheAudio

headphones connect to the Lightning port
insteadwhichmeans you cannot listen to
music while charging your phone unless
you invest in Bluetooth headphones or the
newApplewireless AirPods.
Of course there is an adapter that you
can use, but just like any other additional
accessories, it will cost youmore. Bad
news aside, iPhone 7 has an upgraded
stereo speaker. Now that using head-
phones is gettingmore complicated, the
stereo speaker is quite a huge blessing.
TheMemory
iPhone 7 now comes in 32GB, 128GB and
256GBmemory, finally ditching the 16GB.
The new 32GB base level makes total
sensewith a phone this high-tech as it
requiresmore space for data, apps and
other things.
ThePerformance
iPhone 7 receives an upgrade to Apple’s
“A10 fusion” chip, whichmakes it 40%
more powerful than the iPhone 6. The
chip’s “efficiency cores” are low-powered.
It helps save battery life for less intensive
tasks such as sending textmessages.
Overall, the phone is definitelymuch
speedier.
TheVerdict
Unlike the big stir upwhen the iPhone 6
was released and everythingwas brand
new, iPhone 7 offers very slight improve-
ments to all the great features that the
phone has been known for. It is quite hard
to differentiate between 7 and 6S, which is
not really a good news for thosewho are
planning to switch for design.
Thewater resistant exterior is definitely
attractive but no one should be dipping
their iPhone 7 in the pool as water dam-
age is not covered by an Applewarranty.
The absence of a headphone jack is quite
annoying but as Apple’s Phil Schiller
said, the boldmove is all about ‘courage’.
Perhaps we have to learn to embrace it
…at least until the iPhone 7S or 8 comes
along.
