driving refinement. This also includes the
use of shearmounts in place of compres-
sionmounts, as well as a newCentrifugal
PendulumAbsorber torque converter
to reduce vibration fromthe engine and
transmission, revised spring rates and
improved suspension dampers.
These changes have a positive effect
on ride quality which feels smoother
andmore refined than the pre-facelift
Colorado. Rear passengers will still feel
some bumpiness fromthe leaf spring
suspension but it isn’t uncomfortable nor
unexpected. Addingweight to the flatbed
areawill help reduce the bumpiness but
youwill be sacrificing fuel economy.
Chevrolet also used thicker front door
glass, improved the seals andmoldings
around the doors and glass area as well as
optimised the headlight profile to reduce
wind noise of the newColorado, which is
now claimed to be 8%quieter.
Very littlewind noise intrudes the cabin
at - or - below the highway speed limit.
Go beyond that and you’ will find yourself
talking louder. Regardless, this is still a
pick-up truck so evenwith these refine-
ments it is nomatch for a sedan.
Still, the Colorado drives fairly well on
the road, whether at high speeds or on
twisting country roads. Cornering stability
ismanageable as long as you are not
over-optimistic. But if you’re expecting
car-like handling, you are probably better
off stickingwith a sedan.
The torque curve felt smoothed out to
reduce the jolt but it’s still quite briskwith
the overtaking; themanual mode via the
gear lever helps. Evenwith some hard
driving, the average consumption hovered
around the 11 liter per 100kmmark.
The Features
Even if it’s handling isn’t car-like, the
features included are and is one of
the Colorado’s selling points. It is now
equippedwith Lane
DepartureWarning and
Forward Collision Alert.
Although these are
merely alerts andwill not
steer the Colorado away
fromtrouble, it helps
mitigate accident risk.
Also included in the top-endHigh
Country variant are auto headlights and
rain sensor, front and rear park assist with
reverse camera, driver’s knee airbag, Hill
Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and tire
pressuremonitoring system.
There are also 2 appreciated features
which improve the overall experience.
The comfort closing front windows, which
roll down a little to reduce air resistance
to ease door closing, and the remote
engine start, which allows the engine and
air-conditioning to be started remotely
froma distance (with the doors still
locked). Thewindows too can bewound
up or down via the remote key fob (all 4
windows have one-touch operation and
jamprotection).
Some other features include dual
airbags, ABS, EBD, Electronic Stability
Control, Traction Control and Panic Brake
Assist.
InConclusion
I cannot say the Chevrolet Colorado is the
best pick-up truck to own as needs and
requirements vary. But it is well-equipped
and performs admirably. If you need
a vehicle for the great outdoors or lug
heavy loads, the Colorado is a formidable
competitor to the usual offerings in the
market.
