Fishy business
If tasting the seafood is inadequate, be
sure to bring an icebox to cart home
freshly caught, professionally gutted
fish procured directly from fishermen
at the pier. If you arrive early in the
morning, you may be able to witness
fishing boats coming to shore with their
haul as workers sort and clean the day’s
catch.
Their family members will be laying
out keropok (crackers) or salted fish to
dry under the scorching sun. Some can
also be seen raking dried shrimp atop the
zinc roofs of their houses. By midday,
most will be indulging in an afternoon
siesta or busy mending broken nets.
Or better still, napping on makeshift
hammocks fashioned from fishing nets.
Husk angels, anyone?
What’s a visit to Selangor’s rice bowl
region without a stopover at a paddy
processing plant? Kilang Beras Rakyat
Sekinchan (GPS coordinates 3.520850,
101.129060), operated by PLS Marketing,
welcomes the visiting public. Here, learn
how rice makes its way from the field to
the supermarket. When no one’s looking,
throw yourself onto the towering paddy
husk hills and start making husk angels
(be warned – there have been reports of
mites causing skin rashes). And don’t
forget to grab a few vacuum-sealed
packets of Pearl Grain Rice on your way
out!
