Southern
Comfort
I
t
had been months since last
December and the craziness of the
city was beginning to take its toll on
me and my fellow comrades. It was
a sign for yet another getaway, but
the southern town of Kukup was
the furthest from our minds if not
for an invitation frommy uncle who’s an
estate manager in an oil palm plantation
near that town.
With our bags packed and loaded, we
made our way to Kukup along the windy
trunk roads, through small towns and
villages against the backdrop of a dusky
sky. It was the day after

which marked the end of Chinese New
Year, but the uniquely designed wooden
kampung
(village) houses on stilts were
still lit by the glow of red lanterns. Most of
their occupants sat in the porch watching
as the cars and the world go by.
Kukup and most of its neighbouring
towns along the western shoreline of the
state of Johor, do not have the most idyllic
of beaches – most had been or are peat
swamps – but the fact that the waters
along here are teeming with marine life
due to the rich biodiversity found in these
swamps makes up for a good reason to
visit the picturesque fishing village.
