Energy Efficiency
The convenience and reliability of modern energy are often taken for granted. But providing energy wherever and whenever people
need it is not easy or automatic. The benefits we get from every flip of a light switch – or turn of an engine key or push of an “on”
button – reflect decades of scientific advancement and enormous levels of investment. By adopting energy saving behaviours and
technologies such as LED lighting, lithium ion battery, hydrogen fuel cells or lightweight materials, we use less energy, extend the
life of the world’s energy reserves and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As the world’s population grows and prosperity expands,
efficiency gains are one of the most effective ways to ensure the continued flow of reliable and affordable energy.
Take Five:
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
Going greenmay not be as complicated as starting a vegetable garden or as costly as
buying a hybrid vehicle, but you can startwith these simple everyday steps that can
make a difference in the long-run.
Go Paperless
Waiting
for your bills
to arrive via snail mail is
so old school. With the
internet so conveniently
accessible, consider
signing up for paperless
bills instead. All it takes
is a phone call or a
visit to your provider’s
website. You might even
get a discount for going
paperless!
Turn It Off
While
brushing your
teeth, don’t leave the water
running when you don’t
need it. This simple act
saves litres of water per day.
Men, don’t forget to turn off
the water while you shave
as well.
Flip It
An
oldie but a goodie, this simple
step is usually the one we neglect
most. Lighting takes up quite a
percentage of your home’s energy
bills, so you can save a chunk off
your bill by flipping the switch.
Cut Off the Junk Mail
Not
only because it’s annoying … it’s
extremely wasteful too! So the next
time you sign up for something, choose
to receive your newsletter via email
instead.
Hitch a Ride
The
benefits of carpooling are easy to
see – riding in one car uses less petrol
than two and definitely much less than
three. Taking the bus or the train also
helps to slash the number of cars on the
road, which will help ease the traffic a
little.
