The next day, we took a detour to the
town of Sitiawan for a scrumptious seafood
lunch at Restoran Makanan Laut Villa.
This time, we hit the jackpot! Words could
not describe how fresh the green mussels
steamed in light garlicky, sour and savoury
gravy tasted. The crispy oyster omelette
was also spot on, as were the deep-fried
sa chu
fish (akin to
shishamo
of Japanese
cuisine) served with the famed Kampong
Koh chilli dip.
We frequented Hock Chew So Mee
Shua Konpian to pick up some driedwheat
flour noodles and traditional biscuits and
rounded up our culinary spree at James’
Cendol stall fronting theMahaMariamman
Temple along Jalan Lumut. Clad in an
impeccable white uniform and a red bow-
tie, the all-smiles stall operator served up
bowls of satiny
cendol
with kidney beans
and glutinous rice. Sweet endings don’t get
anymore saccharine than this!
