Managed, Optimised).
The higher a country fares in each of the
five dimensions on the maturity scale,
the higher their levels of competency
and maturity in BDA.
Malaysia AND BDA
Overall, the Asia Pacific excluding Japan
(APeJ) maturity average is about 18%
higher than Malaysia’s. To this effect,
Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri
Najib Razak, addressed the importance
of BDA vis-à-vis the progress of Malaysia
into a Digital Economy by 2020 in the
recent 26th MSC Malaysia Implementa-
tion Council Meeting (ICM) on Oct 23.
BDA was sanctioned as a priority
area for the 11th Malaysia Plan, the
latest in the series of plans for national
development in 2015.
Also in the works are high-impact
BDA projects such as the establish-
ment of two institutes: the first being
the Asian Institute of Data Science
(in collaboration with leading global
universities) and the second, a BDA
Centre of Excellence (led primarily by
the private sector). Another project is
the furthering of the government’s Open
Data initiative through a web portal
listing governmental open data sets for
the public.
Malaysia’s Multimedia Development
Corporation (MDeC) is mandated by the
government to move Malaysia forward
as a technologically savvy country by
the year 2020, and plays a crucial role in
overseeing Big Data Analytics initiatives
and efforts in the country.

assessing BDA PROGRESS
A way to gauge the progress of BDA
in a country is to use the IDC Big Data

cost reductions and reduced risk.
