to some beliefs, running a food business is no simple
feat. The restaurant and catering business is tricky enough as so
imagine if you have to have your food flown out 220 kilometres
from its state of origin, all while ensuring that they arrive safely
and without compromised quality.
Tengku Nor Azah Tengku Mahmood, or, Cik Jah as she is
fondly known among her customers, is the brains and elbow
grease behind Kelate Fying Breakfast (cheekily acronymned as “KFB”). KFB
rapidly gained popularity and turned into a household phenomenon just over
a year after the first batch of its first menu item;
‘Nasi Berlauk Air Dingin’
was
flown in all the way from Kelantan with Firefly Airlines.
The ‘real’ Cik Jah
I’m a very outdoorsy person who loves good food and has a full-time job as
an investor and media relations manager. I used to debate in school and make
killer red-velvet cake but hardly find enough time to do so these days. I believe
that all these elements come together for Kelate Flying Breakfast.
What inspired you to start KFB?
Actually, a friend of mine used to fly food out fromKelantan ... As her agent,
I managed to add
Nasi Tumpang
to the menu until we separated amicably
after I sorted out logistics to continue on my own. Up until today, I can say
that I have refined the business idea with a better system and solution.
Who are your customers?
They are people who appreciate authentic Kelantanese food. On
top of that, I have a lot of friends from different walks of life who
supported and became my customers from when I first started the
business until today.
What makes KFB different from other food delivery service?
Howdoes itwork?
We are 100 per cent authentic and fresh. I managed to
find good suppliers who are ready to prepare the food
from as early as one in the morning. We have suppliers
from different districts and they have to make sure
that everything is packed, labelled and ready to go by
5am. The cargo will reach Subang Skypark Terminal
and ready for collection at 8.30am.
How different is the quality of Kelantanese food
here inKL fromwhat is onKFB’smenu?
Since my family is of royal lineage, our food will
have a certain level of quality benchmarked
against personal high standards – I daresay that
all the foods on the menu of KFB are different
