What do you think of the direction that
local art scene is heading to? Are we
heading towards the right direction?
For me, as long as art is allowed to be
freely expressed, it is heading in the right
direction. Art is the heart and soul of a
city andwe need art as a formof creative
self-expression and reflection no matter
where we are.
Could you tell usmore about the charity
projects you are involvedwith?
Charity work has been part of the Bu-
lan Lifestyle right from the start. The
purpose of my art is to make positive
changes and to inspire. This year, I was
given the opportunity to work on two
awareness campaigns. The first was for
the National Cancer Society Malaysia
(MAKNA) who invited 15 Malaysian
artists to turn a chair into an art piece
to be auctioned off. The second was
a collaboration with Starwood Hotels
to raise money for Gleneagles’ charity
for children in need of heart surgery
through the sales of Bintang the bear
during Christmas. I created four unique
designs on the T-shirts that the bears
wore.
Where do you see Bulan Lifestyle in the

I hope it continues to inspire dreamers
and bring positive changes to the com-
munity.

to complete the challenge. I really enjoyed
it and now I still draw almost every day.
I go everywhere with my art journal.
It has become a traveling companion. I
record what I see in it. It has made me
aware of the important things in my
life. I share my daily art to an audience
through social media. They motivate me
to continue, and in turn, I inspire them to
take up similar creative challenges. Social
media has allowed me to connect and
engage with people globally.
You mentioned Marianna from Floating
Lemons earlier.What’s that all about?
Marianna is an artist I met in Provence
who inspired me to start the sketch a day
challenge. I lost focus and motivation
when things didn’t go as planned and
I didn’t have the answers. As an artist,
I work alone with nobody to share or
develop ideas with. Mariana welcomed
me into her home and took me under
her wing. She patiently mentored me by
sharing her own experiences. She is an
amazingly talented woman and I have a
lot of respect for her and I am grateful for
her guidance.
Howcanyoudescribesomeonewho isthe
perfect embodiment of BulanLifestyle?
Hmm ... A gypsy soul with a positive
attitude, respectful of nature and who is
also socially conscious.
You are always proud of the fact that you
are ‘an island girl’. What is it that you find
fascinatingaboutyourhomestate,Penang?
Penang is my home where I grew up as
a child. It has influenced and shaped my
outlook on life with the laid back lifestyle,
the sense of community, its rich heritage
from the colonial past to the colourful
Nyonya culture and most importantly its
connection with the sea and wanderlust
nature.
