dark night, after
a friend’s wedding, a
group of people took a
wrong turn into Jalan
Galloway. What hap-
pened then was the
start to a fresh new
future: stumbling upon the premises
of what is to be VCR Café. It must be
said, too, that the nights here tend to
be impeccably peaceful, which eventu-
ally cemented the idea of starting a café.
Excited, they approached the previous
tenants of the shop lot, which happened to
be a creative agency. Being creative people,
they, too wanted to start up a café. And
the rest, they say, is history.
A blast from the past
Said owners, of course, are coffee enthu-
siasts. “Why VCR, though?” I wondered.
They decided to name the place VCR,
which is a nod to before the 90s; the
heyday of the ‘VCR’, or, Video Cassette
Recorder. As it turns out, the previous
tenants were called ‘Used Tape,’ hence the
association (and the Wi-Fi name).
Standing tall with a black exterior,
the building is hardly a miss against the
row of white, double-storey shop houses.
The interior is simple and minimal, with
polished wood tables and concrete floor-
ing. Natural daylight pours uninhibitedly
through its massive windows.
For an airy expanse of light and calm,
head to the timber stairway leading up to
the second floor, fittedwith floor-to-ceiling
windows. Part of the second floor also
features a pop-up shop, currently occupied
by a local designer, PearlyWong, until the
end of February. However, the pop-up shop
will be put on hold for future renovations.
Currently able to cater to about 60
persons, not inclusive of the smoking area
available at both floors, VCR café plans
to expand in 2015 by adding more seats
and food options such as breakfast and
warm pastries.
