Café patrons speak highly about the fa-
mous black velvet and best seller, “King”,
a banana layer cake with chocolate and
peanut butter frosting. While it may
sound like quite a sugary explosion of
flavours, it is surprisingly not overly sweet,
and the best part is that each individual
flavour stands out, so they aren’t marred
by the others, and the flavours – oh, the
flavours come together in a wonderful
complementary fusion.
Overall, VCR Café is a solid choice
offering fantastic, hand-picked beans and
a reasonable selection of foods for the dis-
cerning urban-dwelling coffee enthusiast
looking to find calm and serenity in the
hectic bustle of Kuala Lumpur life.
adopts amulti-roaster concept. Thismeans
that their choice of beans is changed on
a regular basis – single origins change
every two weeks. Look out for unique
selections such as the
Sumatra Kuda Mas
Mandheling
– you can call in advance to
enquire which beans are roasting and do
your research on them prior to paying
a visit. The owners scout for the best
batches of coffee locally and regionally
and go through the cupping process, a
professional practicewhereby practitioners
observe the tastes and aromas of brewed
coffee. That is how seriously they take
their coffee.
The café is also known for their “ask
the barista” practice, whereby patrons
ordering their specialty, the hand brew
or filtered coffee get a one-to-one session
or knowledge sharing of the coffee. Other
options for coffee enthusiasts are the latte,
mocha and flat white espresso. They
also cater for non-coffee drinkers, with
selections such as hot or iced chocolate,
and their special hibiscus and lime soda
by the Tapping Tapir. As the café does not
have a menu, you can also opt to “ask the
barista” for recommendations.
Food at VCR
Recently VCR introduced their food menu
which includes the VCR big breakfast,
potato waffle, granola and house salad.
Patrons have given rave reviews for the
French toast and Turkish egg style. What
makes these dishes a favourite? The
French toast is a fluffy brioche toast
served with berries compote, crumbles
and drizzled with mocha sauce espresso
based ice cream. The Turkish egg style
on the other hand is a rich tomato sauce
with chickpeas, chicken chipolata, spinach
greek yoghurt, toasted pistachio with a
slice of sourdough toast with 63 degree
Celsius free range eggs. All are affordably
priced from RM15.
Let them eat cake!
Not merely a coffee joint, VCR café serves
a delectable selection of cakes as well,
delivered thrice a week and sourced from
home-baker Sofia Foo of Frost and Flour-
ish. Aside from normal cakes, they carry
special flavours such as lemon poppy seed
and chocolate apricot, on top of a variety of
cheese cakes such as raspberry, blueberry,
and lemon curd cheese.
