Let me introduce you to someone who
has a knack for mosaic.
The beginning of mosaic for Nor
Nor Elizabeth Britt Ruffin or fondly
known as Nor, has been passionate
about art since she was young. In 2011
she pursued her dreams further when the
joy of motherhood began. “In mosaic I
found a technique that not only allows
me to achieve what I envision but allows
me to pursue a constant theme of mine;
seriality. It’s in the repetitiveness of
‘tesserae’ that I aim to create rhythmic
compositions,” she says.
She started doing mosaic as a hobby
and lady luck has been on her side
since then. Her passion has turned into
a business for this mother of three. Nor
adds, “I get a ‘kick’ out of doing this, it’s
like a natural high.”
For the easiest piece which does not
include grouting, Nor spends about an
hour. It is known that the finer the cut of
the glass, the longer the time it will take
to finish. She also introduces to me, her
brand – ‘Nor Elizabeth Mosaic’ which

business a lot easier.
Inspiration!
What inspires Nor to come up with her
mosaic ideas? “It’s pretty much easy to
be inspired by my mixed heritage, being
half American and half Malay as well as
what I am accustomed to daily as my
husband is from the Middle East. And,
doing my mosaic gives me ‘my time’
so the mood I am in is reflected in the
pieces I do.”
You can learn mosaic too
Nor also conducts mosaic art workshops
for children and adults. All tools and
materials are provided during the work-
shop, where one can learn the basic
techniques – designs, cutting, using
proper adhesives, laying out of glass tiles
and the grouting finishing process. For
a fee of RM550, lunch, coffee and tea is
provided too throughout the two-and-
a-half day workshop. For children, the
