a diamond in the rough. The Kala, a
luxury resort in Koh Samui, Thailand
is the said diamond in question. This
is the place to escape to for those
looking for a serene oasis secluded
from the masses.

The property
Unlike many other resorts that are lined
up chock-a-block on the main beaches of
this island, The Kala is nestled away on
the hilly side of Koh Samui. Although not
situated in an entirely secluded place, it is
a tranquil private space not too far off from
the main highlights of this intoxicating
island.
In Thai, ‘kala’ translates to coconut
shell; hence, coconut is a major motif in
the resort’s aesthetic. The resort was built
on private landwhichwas a coconut plan-
tation. It pays homage to this local fruit,
from the hand soaps to coconut shells used
as ‘do not disturb’ and ‘please make up
room’ signs, coconut reigns supreme here.
The Kala exudes an organic ambiencewith
its earthy tones and wooden furniture.
The Kala isn’t the usual fanfare of fran-
chise style beach resorts, this boutique
resort is cosy and quaint with only thirty
eight rooms based on four different room
categories. There are twenty eight deluxe
rooms, two deluxe family rooms, seven
duplex pool villas and a presidential suite.
No matter the room category each
room guarantees a sea view and comes
complete with outdoor balcony. Each
room has a signature antique furniture
piece; attention to detail is displayed in
the little flourishes throughout the room
such as the towel decorations and even the
toilet roll lineal arrangement. The ceiling
to floor windows of the rooms enhance
the picturesque views of the bright blue
