He continued his keen observation on
the behaviours of the different social strata
of society, regardless of age, gender and
occupation in his inaugural solo exhibition
Senyap dalam Gege
, at Gallery G13 in
2014. The many facets of the ordinary
folk presented in his signature strokes
and minimal washes of colours were so
well received that immediately after the
completion of his solo exhibition run,
Khairudin was given a second solo, this
time at Art Taipei in Taiwan. It was fol-
lowedwith another solo showat this year’s
Singapore Art Stage. All three shows were
successful and all works were snapped up
by eager collectors.
Sensing the huge potential reception to
the works of Khairudin, Kenny Teng has
lined up a few more exhibitions this year
to further expose the unique skills of this
artist under his gallery’s stable. Khairudin
will be participating in G13’s upcoming
group show in Ke-Yuan Gallery, Taichung,
Taiwan this May, followed by Art Jakarta
in August and Art Taipei in November.
especially an upcoming one.
Young Khairudin Zainudin is an up-
coming contemporary visual artist who
has been building a steady reputation
for himself with his unique approach in
documenting themundane and quotidian.
Born and raised in Kelantan, Khairudin
has always wanted to be a visual artist ...
ever since he was in primary school. His
earliest exposure to some form of art was
comics. The 28 year post-graduate student
from UiTM remembers receiving much
encouragement from both his parents
initially. However, upon completion of
high school, he was expected to pursue
a respectable profession with a monthly
income.
At first, he was unsure of where he
would need to go to receive an art educa-
tion but Khairudin remained adamant on
his career choice in life and was further
inspired when he came across works
by some of the country’s leading con-
temporary artists, namely Bayu Utomo,
Fuad Osman and Hamir Shoib who were
members of the Matahati collective. He
applied and was accepted into UiTM, the
country’s leading art and design institu-
tion. It was during his post graduate’s
show in 2013 that he was approached by
Kenny Teng from G13 Gallery. Though he
had participated in a fewgroup exhibitions
under the gallery, it was his new and
innovative approach that caught the eye of
Kenny Teng. Thus began his meteoric rise
with a series of successful sold out shows
locally and abroad.
Khairudin’s chief interests are Kel-
antanese traditions, cultures and all the
realities of the local population. Instead of
just highlighting the obvious, Khairudin is
interested in capturing the state of mind or
restless disposition of his subject matter.
Khairudin’s previous works that were
exhibited at the Malaysia International
Art Expo featured nameless workers com-
muting in public transport and ordinary
people engaged in all kinds of transactions,
provide a refreshing take on a common
and popular theme.
