are the fu-
ture prospects
for a graduate
i n t h e v i -
sual arts in this
country today?
Not very prom-
ising apparently, judging from the high rate
of art graduates who have opted to pursue
careers totally unrelated to their training
and areas of specialisation just months into
the ‘real ’ world. Obviously, there are no
9-6 jobs readily waiting for these young,
creative and artistic individuals after
completing a three-year course specialising
in the various disciplines of art production.
Those who choose to soldier on will
facemany challenges and obstacles before
giving up, predictably, for more practical
and stable professions. However, it’s that
handful, through a combination of hard
work, imagination and luck, who will
reap the financial rewards and professional
successes in their artistic pursuits that
await them in the long run. Other more
pivotal factors are the role that gallery
owners, curators, art writers, patrons and
collectors play in the success of an artist,
