Kuching: For The First Time
T
here
is always a first
time for everything. Being
Malaysian citizens, we are
fortunate enough to have
the ability to explore the
country and get first-hand
experience of its culture.
That is just one of the perks of being
a citizen of a relatively small country.
Imagine being in a country so huge that it
is expensive to travel domestically due to
the large distances that have to be covered
to get to your destination. Most of us have
been to each and every one of the states
in peninsular Malaysia because there is
just no excuse not to. Sabah and Sarawak,
however, is a whole different story. It takes
a lot more effort to get to as a flight is
involved. That is the one and only reason
why I have not been to Sarawak until
recently, when I finally decided that it was
time to experience the cultural of the other
side of my country. Kuching, here I come!
The journey to Kuching on a plane
takes only an hour 45 minutes. Kuching
Airport is located just 11 kilometres from
the city centre. You can either take a cab
or make an earlier arrangement with the
hotel for a pick-up. I took a cabwhich cost
RM26, which I found very reasonable.
As for hotels, there are many selections
to choose from depending on the kind of
holiday that you are planning to have.
If it is a backpacking holiday, there are
guesthouses located all over the city with
room rates starting from as low as RM90.
If it is a business trip and paid for by the
company, why not book a fancier room at
the PullmanHotel, Four Points by Sheraton
or Grand Margherita Hotel? My trip was
somewhere in between, so I opted for
a comfortable yet affordable room in a
smaller hotel located at Jalan Song Thian
Cheok, just a stone’s throw away from
eateries, shopping malls and other tourist
attractions in Kuching town.
