bakar or grilled fish is pretty
famous inMalaysia, especially if you
are on a beach holiday. However, it
is also easy to find this dish in Kuala
Lumpur. Ikan bakar
is normally
paired with a great sauce. There are
various types of sauces but the most
common ones are the tamarind saucewith
chillies and onions and
budu
or
cincalok
.
Budu is a fish sauce and one of the best
known fermented product in Kelantan and
Terengganu,
cincalok
on the other hand, is
fermented shrimp that has a strong smell
and is pink in colour.
The
ikan bakar
is usually marinated
in spices and wrapped in banana leaf. It
is put to the grill once a customer orders
the type of fish he wants. The usual type
of fish that you see at an
ikan bakar
stall
are red talapia, stingray, cat fish or Spanish
mackerel.

If you know the famous KLCC shopping
centre, all you need to do is walk out to
a little hidden stall that not many people
know of or realise it’s even there. It is
behind the Lembaga Getah building. Not
only are there a variety of grilled fish, there
are also a variety of other dishes that can
be eaten with rice.

Mat Teh Ikan Bakar, Dato’
Keramat
A little stall located opposite the wet
market of Dato’ Keramat is also easy to
find as it is situated opposite the Dato’
Keramat LRT station. Here, you get a good
selection of
ulam
or raw vegetables to go
with your rice, soup and grilled fish.

afternoon until 6pm
Ikan Bakar Berempah Kuala
Lumpur, Jalan Raja Muda Musa
Covered by a zinc roof, this stall is known
not only for its grilled fish but also for its
other dishes.
Opening hours: Daily, 7am - 12.30pm
and 5pm - 10pm
Ikan Bakar Arang, Gerai No.B13,
Medan Selera Taman Melawati,
Lorong Perak
In the heart of Taman Melawati, opposite
the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, sits one
small stall in the huge medan selera or
food court. The fish is displayed on wire
racks and grilled over a split oil drum.
Here you can get an unusual choice of
fish, some stuffed with
sambal
.
Opening hours: 12pm to 4pm; closed
on Sundays
Jalan Bellamy
There are more than three stalls to choose
from when you come to Jalan Bellamy
in Kuala Lumpur. These stalls are hid-
den behind the old Istana Negara, until
recently, the official residence of the Yang
di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. The place
is always crowded during lunch time so it
is wise to come early to get the best fish
and seat.
