Comfort Food Cafe
opened its doors on Nov 20,
2012 in Solaris Dutamas. It is
owned by Nik Michael Imran
who is of mixed Australian-
Malay heritage and he owes
his culinary skills to his father
Dato’ Nik Ezar Nik Bolia, who is himself a chef.
PickNik’s decoration and seating arrange-
ments have been kept simple with an open
kitchen concept allowing diners to view the
chefs’ cooking skills. The dishes here are a
fusion of Asian and Western influences.
At aged nine, Nik Michael made a
crepe
suzette
and has never looked back since than.
Known for his appearance in the first season
of MasterChef Malaysia, he cites his father as
being his number one inspiration. Nik Michael
also admires PickNik head chef Pathmanathan’s
work. Chef Patmanathan is a 25 year veteran
of the kitchen and has helmed a Michelin star
restaurant.
Nik Michael, whose expertise lies in Italian
and French cooking says: “You don’t have to be
a genius to cook. It is a life skill just like riding
a bike or even swimming”.

The
stracciatella
is a definitely must have
appetiser as this Italian soup is not easily found
in Kuala Lumpur.
“Stracciatella”
means “little
shred” in Italian.
“The
stracciatella
is my personal favourite as
I grew up with it,” adds Nik Michael.
A favourite amongst the female diners is
the salmon, rocket and mango salad which is a
delightful combination of crunchy rocket and
almond slices, sweet mango and salmon.
PickNik also features an Asian persuasion
menu. Diners can choose from
nasi goreng
kampung, char kuey teow, spaghetti goreng
mamak, nasi goreng sriracha
or
nasi lemak
biasa.
Some of the must try
tapas
at PickNik are
the
sautéed mushrooms, chicken liver pate
and
deep
fried
squid
.
As nod towards the local Malaysian palate,
PickNik features a
pandan
crème brulee
on it’s
desserts menu. Perfectly paired with thick
gula
Melaka
, the dessert is another must try.
