PERSONALITY
wear, she found herself creating them as
she gradually got more and more requests
from brides-to-be. “ I enjoy doing bridal
wear as I can share my input with others
and vice versa – as long as the bride looks
beautiful in her bridal wear and the dress
retains the concept of a bridal gown. I
don’t like being too stringent,” saidNurita.
“I think the fact that people are group-
ing designers under ‘labels’ would be
something I’d like to change about the
fashion industry. Just because you design
bridal wear, does not mean that you are
not good at designing edgy pieces or
current looks. We are always learning and
experimenting,” she remarked.
Her proudest moment as a fashion
designer was when she finally opened
her new showroom and studio in 2014.
The accomplished designer calls Rihanna
her fashion idol and loves creations from
designers AlexanderMcQueen and Phoebe

“My dream is to have my collection
seen in New York!” she added.

a very young age,
Nurita Harith knew she
wasmeant to be a designer.
She had already begun
drawing before primary
school, but it was only
during secondary school
that Nurita discoveredmore about models,
fashion and designers. And at the time, she
was obsessed with Linda Evangelista and
Alexander McQueen.
Having graduated with a Bachelor of
Fashion Design from the Surrey Institute
of Art in London, Nurita was also a fine
arts major prior to obtaining her degree
in fashion. To add to this, she has also
dabbled in sculpturing , the influences
of which are evident in her edgy fashion
style, which feature unique shapes and
structure.
“My first design as a student (as I was
on a budget) wasmade usingmuslin. That
taught me some technical aspects like how
to dye and get the right colour because I
couldn’t buy that specific material. And
that’s when I started draping. I found a
material called crin – when you put it on
a mannequin, you can shape it around.
Nurita Harith:
Her Shapes and Drapes
My lecturer noticed that I was not really
into the technical bits, like drafting for
suits and jackets. I prefer working with a
mannequin,” shared Nurita.
Her own brand
Before opening her own boutique, Nurita
worked with local designer Bill Keith and
showcased her first line for KL Fashion
Week in 2006. From thereon, she kept
pursuing her dreams and had entered
various competitions, including Project
Runway Malaysia in 2007.
Nurita Harith who manages her own
boutique in Bangsar is known for designs
which usually consist of soft layers of
chiffon with sculptural influences to
create shapes and drapes. Her designs
are feminine with a touch of masculinity.
Nurita has a ready-to-wear line and has
also branched out into custom-made
designs. “I have a good 15 people in my
team and it has been a great learning
experience. Each day comes with a new
experience, and sometimes it can be quite
challenging tomanage andmake sure that
everything goes well,” explained Nurita
