Embracing Nature’s Tranquility at
Sailor’s Rest Resort, Janda Baik
History of the land
An ex-sailor in service for 37 years, Da-
tuk Tuan Hashim and his wife manages
Sailor’s Rest Resort located in Janda Baik.
Janda Baik is a small village in Bentong,
Pahang. Known to people as the hot spot
for camp sites, resorts and hot springs,
Janda Baik has a cool breeze tropical
climate of 22 degrees celsius. This Malay
kampung
or village is surrounded by
natural tropical rain forest. It is ideal for
retreats from the hectic city life. Janda Baik
is situated near Genting Sempah, about a
40-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur.
“I was at sea most of the time and of
course I missed the jungle and country life.
I therefore told my family that if I retire, it
would be away from the beach and into
the jungle,” shared Datuk Tuan Hashim.
In the early 80s, the place where Datuk
TuanHashim is nowwas just a junglewith

no roads. His friend had a piece of land
nearby and he asked Datuk Tuan Hashim
if he wanted an area not far from his. As
soon as he described the land, Datuk
Tuan Hashim, without even looking at it,
acquired it.
Finally when he came to see the land,
his friends, who were with him, thought
he was crazy about developing it. “As
soon as I got the land, I cleared it as there
were some swamp areas, flat land and
hills on both sides. And a wind tunnel
too. I thought it was good. I got the best
of everything,” said Datuk Tuan Hashim.
A Canadian friend of his had stayed
in the weekend home and suggested that
Datuk Tuan Hashim open the place to
the public. And that was the beginning
of Sailor’s Rest Resort, now a homestay
destination. Two years after that, the
boathouse was built followed by the two
kampung chalets and the development
continued for the next three to four years.
And the most recent addition to Sailor’s
Rest Resort is the glamping area.
Types of rooms
At Sailor’s Rest Resort, guests have the op-
tion of staying at the bungalow, boathouse,
chalets or in one of the large glamorous
camping tents. I had the privilege of
bunking in for a night at the boathouse.
Arriving at the resort, I was taken aback
for a moment with the lush greenery and
the fresh air at the resort. It was indeed
the perfect place to be after a hectic
week. Walking around before heading
to the boathouse, I noticed families were
enjoying a dip in the river. Datuk Tuan
