Nik Mohd Hadzri, Nik Shazmie and Nik Shafiz are the latest sensation to hit the local
contemporary art scene.
I
t
is actually quite rare to come
across siblings who are equally
artistic and pursuing a career in
the visual arts together. However
in Malaysia, there were a few ex-
ceptional cases. In the 1950s, there
was the Kedah-born Ibrahim Abu
Bakar (1925-1977) or better known as
A B Ibrahim with his brothers Hassan,
Kechick, Ahmad and Yusuf who were
among the earlier generation of pre-war
artists well regarded for their water colour
paintings. The children of the late Datuk
Chuah Thean Teng@ Teng (1912-2008)
who pioneered batik as a modern art,

Fast forward a few decades later, the
latest artists siblings to emerge in the local
art scene are the Nik brothers. Poised for
something great with their début group
show last month, the Nik brothers’ Art
Trio exhibition was made possible by
G13 Gallery’s Kenny Teng who sawmuch
potential in the contemporary approaches
of the three talented siblings, who are
all graduates from UiTM, the country’s
leading art institution. Each brother has
