and talented siblings who made their
reputation in the music business. Formed
by brothers Norman, Yusry and Edry
Abdul Halim, the pop, R&B and hip-hop
group KRU made their debut in 1992.
The KRU brothers are a model of success
where they are rightfully celebrated
for their artistry and diligence. Does a
similar future of fame and fortune await
the Nik brothers? We certainly hope so.

to introduce
to you, the latest sensation to hit the
local contemporary art scene, Nik Mohd
Hadzri, Nik Shazmie and Nik Shahfiz,
brothers-in-art and life.
issues and concerns which strongly testify
to their skilfully rendered figurative paint-
ings on themes ranging from the solemn,
humorous and to the strange.
The recently concluded exhibition
was a rousing success as predicted by the
beaming gallerist. Teng, who is always
on the lookout for young and promising
talents to support, explains that “this
exhibition will indeed be an interesting
debut of sorts for the three siblings
because it is something seldom seen in
the local art circuit”. He further added
that “I wanted to show them together
as a way to celebrate their talents and
to highlight how the brothers’ artistic
strengths, styles and approaches will
complement each other”. The eldest
brother, Nik Mohd Hadzri is noted for
his highly realistic rendering
of the human form and faces
with its subtle use of light to
achieve a certain atmosphere of solem-
nity, while his 24-year-old brother Nik
Shazmie’s works are inclined towards a
sense of playfulness.
His slightly distorted figures in tragi-
comedic settings underscore the ironic
and farcical situations many of us have
unexpectedly experienced with a shrug
and a sigh not in resignation, but with a
“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” attitude. Nik
Shahfiz, the youngest at 22, employs a
style which amplifies the strange tingling
sensation of movements that visually
alludes to the psychological dispositions
of his subject matters.
