the Kepong Botanical Gardens, allowing
visitors a peek at botany and horticulture.
Think of it as a farm for all plants, some
even with medicinal properties like the
famed Tongkat Ali, known to increase
male libido. It almost feels like you’ve
stepped into a magical land, where each
leaf exhibits different qualities. Visitors
with green fingers will fall in love with this
Ethno-botanic garden. Rows and rows of
flora unknown to most of mankind.
If plants aren’t really your thing, you
need not be bored standing around the
Greenhouse. Those looking for some
adrenalin pumping action will get a kick
from being at FRIM. Put on your running
shoes and get in gear. There is an array of
nature trails for jungle trekking, animal-
spotting or just a leisurely stroll. Keep an
eye out for the cheeky monkeys. The trails
cover the whole property so be prepared
to walk through plantations, climb over
small hills, waddle through wetlands
and crawl up steep pastures. Some of
these paths have existed since the 1930s.
Expect a good crowd during the weekends
and watch out for avid mountain bikers
whizzing through the greenery.
For those looking to just relax, FRIM
has got a pretty good camping and picnic
spot within its forested grounds. Youwon’t
require much walking to get to the clear
grounds as cars can easily drive to them.
The area is located along Jalan Foxworthy,
where you’ll find a couple of restaurants
with restroom facilities for you to have a
lazy day. The picnic spot is located close
to a beautiful waterfall. There’ll be families
grilling up a storm so you might want to
prepare some yummy bites before heading
out there.
One thing that you will not want to
miss out on is the Canopy Walkway. It’s a
highlight and an absolute must-do while
you are there.This is a 150m longwalkway
that is 30m above ground level and the
views are simply spectacular. The path
was previously onlymeant for researchers
looking to study the taller trees, but they
soon realised that Mother Nature’s beauty
should be sharedwith themasses and thus
opened it up to the public. You literally
feel like you’re hovering above the forest
grounds and it’s a great feeling to walk at
tree level. Sometimes when the skies are
clear enough, you may even get a peek at
the Kuala Lumpur skyline. However, to
keep by the sanctity of this beautiful forest
there is a daily limit of 250 people who
are allowed to walk through the Canopy
Walkway.
The younger generation may never get
to climb a tree or build tree houses, but
FRIM is keeping the beauty of nature alive
and well in its sprawling reserve. It is a
short trip to a green paradise so don’t miss
out on the amazing beauty that is there.
