Lake Como (Italy)
Lake
Como is a slightly fancier retreat,
mostly preferred by the rich and famous. As
a tourist attraction, it promises top historical
and cultural spots. The third largest lake in
Italy, Lake Como is where you go to relax,
albeit in a slightly fancier way; where recre-
ational activities like hiking and kayaking are
the norm, here they are replaced with sailing
and spa pampering. There are also private
lakeside villas like Villa Carlotta, which has
now been turned into a museum. Take a ride
on the ferry, Lake Comos’ preferred public
transport system that links all the small
towns around the lake. Don’t be surprised if
you bump into George Clooney or Madonna
who both have homes on the lake shore.
Lakes of Killarney (Ireland)
The Lakes of Killarney are located near
Killarney, County Kerry, in Ireland. They con-
sist of three lakes - Lough Leane, Muckross
Lake (also called Middle Lake) and Upper
Lake. To get around these three lakes, you
can either travel by boat or ride in horse-
drawn carriages which would take you to
the famous Gap of Dunloe, a narrow, four-
mile mountain pass formed by enormous
glacial rocks. There are many other sites of
natural, historic, and religious interest on
the lakes, which are worth paying a visit.
You can find that they are mostly contained
in the surrounding Killarney National Park.
Tourist attractions like Ross Castle, Muckross
Abbey and Muckross House are all located
on the shore while on Lough Leane, there
lies Innisfallen Island, home to the ruins of
Innisfallen Abbey.
Lake Powell (USA)
Lake
Powell is slightly different from the
rest on the list – it was created by damming
the Glen Canyon back in 1963. It has since
become the second largest man-made reser-
voir in the United States right behind Lake
Mead in Nevada. Lake Powell offers a more
laid-back setting for vacationers since access
to the lake is limited to parts of developed
marinas due to it being mostly surrounded
by sandstone walls. Some of the more
enjoyable activities at Lake Powell include
boating, fishing, water-skiing, jet-skiing and
hiking. The lake draws about two million
visitors each year who are mostly campers
who set up camp in the canyons. Still can’t
figure out what the fuss about Lake Powell
is all about? It was the filming location for
the Oscar winning motion picture, Gravity.
