How has dancing influenced his
life?
Dancing has brought Yin to different parts
of the world. He loves travelling and being
able to learn about different cultures is
something he looks forward to. “From
my experience, it builds character and it
keeps me on my feet. There are so many
dancers in the world that not many have
seen or heard of. Knowing that fact has
taught me a lot about humility. Nobody
will ever be the best, because, you don’t
even know what is the best.”
Yin, who wants to be in the dance
scene for as a long as he can, also hopes
to see his kids in the same industry.
Currently he is working on a few projects
which he would rather not talk about as
he wishes to surprise the industry, so
keep an eye out.
Working with big names
Having had the opportunity to work
with Jay Park, Mizz Nina, Faizal Tahir,
Reshmonu and many more, Yin sees
dancing as an art form, not just a hobby
to fill his free time. “I would love to work
with Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, Big
Bang, Usher, Omarion and Tae Yang, just
to name a few,” said Yin.
His name not ringing any bells? His
YouTube channel, iamdennisyin, will
prove that he is not just a pretty face with
a great physique to match. Yin definitely
is a talented dancer with a personality
that is contagious. Although not a stand
up comedian, he loves to make people
laugh or smile and that, he says, makes
his day. Always willing to try new things,
Yin also sees YouTube as a way to express
his “inner actor”. Grateful to have had the
opportunity of meeting YouTubers like
Germani, Shawn Lee, Jinnyboy, Reuben,
Dan Khoo, Ming Thing, Grim and others,
Yin was also given the opportunity to
show off his acting skills in their videos.
“The hip hop dance scene is definitely
growing. More people are accepting the
culture and see it as more than just a
dance. Parents are allowing kids to par-
cipate in dance classes and competitions
and that in general is helping the scene to
grow so much more,” he said.
“A lot of people have asked me about
how to become a professional dancer. All
I can say is if you have a passion, stick
to it. Don’t follow a trend, or hop on the
bandwagon just because it is cool. Do
what you love, let the passion grow inside
you, and you’ll never know, someday,
you might be doing what you love as a
career. I’ve been blessed with that and
I’m thankful for it everyday,” added Yin.
Can you make a living as a
dancer?
There are a lot of misconceptions about
dancing for a living. Although Yin agrees
that being a full time dancer is not an
easy career path at all, he believes if that
is one’s passion, one will do it “even if
it breaks you”. “It might seem there’s a
lot of glitz and glam when a dancer is
on stage, but the preparation and blood,
sweat and tears that go into into making
a show is a lot. If you have a lot of shows,
yes, you can make a decent living. No
matter how much it takes out of you and
kicks you down, you have stand back up
ready to fight.”
All about ECX
Yin rehearses with ECX beyween six
to eight hours a day for weeks before a
competition. He believes that even sitting
down is part of the training. “Someone
once told me, if you want to be good at
something, you’ll have to give it at least
10,000 hours.”
As a team, ECX is really strong. They
have won numerous dance competitions
as well as a bronze medal at the
2013 Hip
Hop International Adult Division World
Hip Hop Dance Championship
finals in
Las Vegas. “We have trained a lot, and I
mean a lot, to work on our cohesiveness,
sharpness, strength, chemistry and more.
The entertainment value as well as the
crowd appeal counts for a lot as well. I
think we have packaged ourselves pretty
well,” said Yin about ECX.
