Women in a male dominated
world
When asked whether it was harder for
women to become famous radio announc-
ers or DJs, she disagreed with that idea.
“It’s not harder for a woman to become
a famous radio announcer or DJ. I think
the popular radio announcers or DJs we
have come to love are the ones we find
we can relate to or connect with. Listeners
would also favour a DJ who introduces
new songs out of the norm. I believe the
tone and intonation of the voice for a radio
announcer plays a huge part in getting a
following. So, be it aman or woman, either
one can be a famous radio
announcer.”

PERSONALITY
Janice Yap
T
his
lanky lass,who started
dancing at age four, is
currently the Head Vocal
Coach of Life Academy.
She finds that her experi-
ence with vocal training,
as well as radio announc-
ing and television hosting, is of great
benefit in this role.
Yap said that the person she feared
most as a child was her dad. Though it
was he who paved the way for her love of
music and fun, her father was also quite
strict. “I dared to do a lot of crazy things,
but I was always fearful of ticking himoff,”
she said. He did, however, teach her the
valuable life lesson of not being afraid to
try new things and to keep trying, instead
of worrying about failure.
“Thrilling” is the word Yap used to
describe her first day as a radio announcer.
She had to learn to “drive” the system,
manage the time, songs, contests, callers
and content while at the same time trying
to speak calmly and cheerfully on air.
There are several hats Yap wears be-
sides being a radio announcer. She’s also
a TV presenter, singer, writer, dance cho-
reographer, voice-over talent, model, actor,
vocal coach and songwriter. “ I make it
a point not to take on too much at one
time. Having said that, to find the time to
manage all these various roles, I do work
very long hours and weekends as well.
However, it helps that I love everything
I do and that I have an understanding
husband, family and friends.”
Yap was the singer and songwriter for
her band, Janice and the Supertank, which
she left in 2012. Adding to her many
talents, Yap is self- taught on all the
instruments that she plays which
includes the guitar and drums
and has also written a book
entitled “Unlock Your Voice-
The Secrets to Singing.”
