Contemporary visual artist Haslin Ismail’s
detailed mixed media works in two and
three dimensions and never ceases to
amaze or captivate. The former UiTMfine
arts graduate’s works are imbued with so
much symbolism and inexplicable narra-
tives that one finds much to ponder about
and enjoy. It is never easy to explain away
his mind boggling figures and landscapes,
which are the result of his ability to tap
effortlessly into the subconscious to bring
much encouragement from his elder
brother, Hasren Ismail @ Uneh, who
is also an artist specialising in colour
pencil drawings. He would routinely seek
his brother’s advice on improving his
technical skills but his imagination was
nurtured by Uneh’s collection of books,
magazines and movies, which were then
in the old VHS format. Later, Haslin was
exposed to numerous western art ideas,
from expressionism and surrealism to
contemporary art movements, namely
Pop Surrealism, Goth, Lowbrow and
Fantasy art. Even contemporary illustra-
tors are counted among his influences.
Haslin feels that these different genres
and approaches which celebrate the
powers of the unconscious mind and
the imagination are an integral part of
his personality and this has made it the
central approach in all his works.
