These Men
release. It was a surreal experi-
ence being able to play at different venues,
along with broad-genres of bands and we
get to explore new places and meet new
people along the way. It was definitely a
dream come true.
Asartistes,whodoyoulookuptoandwhy?
We are still very influenced by the 90’s
band generation. And by virtue of being
so, we look up to bands like Pearl Jam,
Foo Fighters, Sonic Youth andmore. These
guys made it and they are still doing what
they love. We can only hope to be like
them one day.
How far do you plan to take your music?
Ultimately,what doyouhope toachieve?
As far as we can! We started off with just
playing pub gigs and the dream then was
to play bigger shows. Slowly, we started
achieving that, so the next dream was to
open for some international band. Then it
was to play outside of Malaysia. Our goals
will evolve over time, but ultimately I think
we can only dreamof having a chance, one
day, to play our music to people around
the world.
What advice would you give to other
aspiringbands?
Be persistent, do it for the right reasons
and stay humble. It’s so important to
love doing what you are doing, because
after a while, there are other things that
come into a musician’s life which bog you
down, like marketing yourself, sorting out
merchandise, etc. But when you get on
that stage and play even to a small crowd
of friends, it is all worth it!
Name three things you guys must have
with you by your side when you write a
tune/song?
1) Our instruments.
2) Something to record what we are
playing so that we can refer to it later
if we felt it was good.
3) A picture of Tony Danza ... cause ....
well ... why not, right?
What areyour 9 to5 jobs?
Fuad is a Fund Analyst, Gael works in a
Digital Creative Agency, Shak is in Property
Development, Hairi in Oil & Gas and Shan
works in Insurance. All very corporate
type jobs.
What are some of the challenges that you
face as a band and how do you overcome
them?
Time is our biggest challenge. There is so
much we would like to do, but we never
have enough time. We all have day jobs
and sadly they are not even straight up
nine to five jobs, so we all have to juggle
our work,band and personal lives.
What would you say has been the most
memorable moment for each one of you,
since you’ve been performing together as
aband?
Gael:
I think the
Catch These Men
album
launch in KL will be one of our most
memorablemoments. The industry is small
and to be a rock band inMalaysia is not the
mainstream thing. But to see almost 600
people turn up for your own launch event
and come out to dance and sing during
the entire set made it all that much more
special. It’s amazing to see that our music
is able to touch people in that way.
Hairi:
Mine would be getting the opportu-
nity to do a tour, local and international.
We recently did a back-to-back Malaysia
and Japan tour in conjunction with
