belongings of the late Malaysian writer
Zainal Abidin Ahmad (Za’ba). From
the old clothes, wooden furniture and
gramophone to the book collection and
typewriter, Teratak Za’ba will transport
you back to a simpler time, allowing
one to be a part of the wonderful life
journey of the local-born writer, who was
responsible for the modernisation of the
Malay language in the 1930s.
Another place worth visiting is Fort
Lukut which is located on the summit
of a hill known as Bukit Gajah Mati or
Bukit Raja. The fort was built by the Bugis
years after a civil war due to a tin mining
levy erupted. Today, the 200 metre by
170 metre fort attracts many visitors,
with history buffs being able to gather
information at the Lukut Museum, which
is just next to the fort.
The Food
Just like any other state in Malaysia, the
traditional cuisine in Negeri Sembilan
is to-die-for. The most popular dish is
the signature
gulai
, which is made
using ingredients such as coconut
milk, turmeric, lemongrass and
most importantly,
cili padi
.
Cili
padi
is the small-sized chilli
that gives a special aroma and
packs a mighty punch. The
typical options of fish, beef
and chicken aside, fruits and
vegetables like unripe banana
and papaya as well as water
spinach and pumpkin can also
be cooked
gulai
style. Even
though
gulai
or
masak lemak cili
padi
is also available in other states, they
cannot compare to the authentic Negeri
Sembilan preparation.
Lemang
is another specialty of this
state. Usually served during Hari Raya
in other parts of the country,
lemang
is
available even on regular days in Negeri
Sembilan, with the locals selling it by
the roadside and stalls set up in smaller
village areas. If you go to the town of
Kuala Pilah, do not forget to try out the
popular
Cendol Pilah
located at Kuala
Pilah Bus Terminal. The milky taste of
coconut milk and the sweetness of special
palm sugar is the perfect combination for
a cold drink to combat the heat in the
driest state in Malaysia.
