a must after a long day – so is the

jamon
! Be warned that Spaniards
dine late – if you choose to eat before
9pm you may have the place to yourself!
Foodies should not miss the
Boqueria
– or the
Mercat de Sant Josep de la Bo-
queria
to give it the full name. The city’s
market can be dated back to 1217 and is
a firm contender for title of finest market
in Europe, thanks to its dazzling range of
products in every colour of the rainbow.
If you are not a fan of crowds, visit just
for the spectacle and then find a smaller,
calmer neighbourhood
market to purchase some
edibles instead, where
food is fresh, cheap and
plentiful.

Parks, squares, markets
and the tourist hotspot
La Rambla
– the city’s
mos t famous s t reet
consisting of five differ-
ent avenues – all make
Barcelona an entirely
walkable city. Those ac-
tive are advised to walk
the streets and discover
rather than dash from
one attraction to another.
The atmosphere is
fun and creative, and
with so many splendid
buildings dotting the
city, hours can be spent exploring off-
map and leave you with a real sense of
the city.
It’s always good to escape the city
when you can, and a top day trip is to the
stunning
Santa Maria de Montserrat Ab-
bey
, situated 48km from Barcelona. The
abbey is well-served by trains from Bar-
celona and the railway station connects
visitors to a funicular for transportation
up to the mountain top where the abbey
resides 1,236m above the valley floor.
The setting is stunning and the build-
ing is a treat to explore, with a museum
featuring art by the local favourites (Pi-
casso of course) and a stunning basilica
where one of the continent’s oldest choirs
can be heard.
Barcelona is a city that bristles with
multiple attractions and an infectious
atmosphere, combining old with new and
urbanity with beaches for a holiday that
will satisfy yet leave you wanting more.
Visit once and return forever to a city
that stands distinct as one of Europe’s
most diverse.
