Banda Aceh: A Phoenix Rising
Present meet past
The city of Banda Aceh has been rebuilt
after the 2004 tsunami and a lot has
changed. One of the more sombre tourist
attractions is the Aceh Tsunami Museum
building, which showcases the panic and
dark period of the tragedy. The museum
was designed by Ridwan Kamil, an
architect and the incumbent Mayor of
Bandung. Exhibitions at the museum
include an electronic simulation of the
Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami
along with photographs, belongings of
victims left behind and exhibits featuring
stories from survivors of the disaster.
You will get chills just by looking at a
damaged motorbike and the broken
household items.
The boat which landed on a house
during the tsunami is another tourist
attraction. It helped saved 59 lives and
