The taste of Aceh
The food served here is very similar to Malay-
sian food but the style of service is different.
It is normal to be served almost all items from
the menu in small plates once you are seated
at any restaurants in Aceh like Lem Bakrie
which is famous for its spicy
Kari Kambing
.
Acehnese Curry,
Gulai
and
Sambal
along with
Ayam Tangkap
and
Kari Bebek
are amongst
the popular dishes that are served with rice.
Aceh food has a tendency of being on the
spicy side but it is so good you won’t pay
attention to the fact that your lips are already
numb halfway through the meal. Take a sip
of the refreshing
Es Timun
to balance out
your palate. The drink is made out of an
interesting combination of shaved cucumber
and lemonade with ice and sugar. Desserts
like bakang, putu Aceh
and
bolu bhoi
are also
worth trying.
remains on top of the house until today. There is also an actual
2600 ton ship which was washed ashore five kilometres away
fromwhere it initially was. Visitors are able to climb up to the ship
from a designated metal ramp and if they are lucky, there may
be friendly locals around to tell them their first-hand experiences
of the event.
With over 98% of the population being Muslim, mosques
are prominent fixtures in Banda Aceh. One in particular, The
Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, is a symbol of Islam, culture, spirit,
strength, struggle and nationalism of the Acehnese people. The
mosque is a landmark of Banda Aceh and was virtually unscathed
by the tsunami. According to architectural experts, Baiturrahman
Grand Mosque and other mosques in Banda Aceh survived
because they were sturdily built with stronger foundations
compared to surrounding structures. Regardless of that, many
survivors believe the mosques were spared by a higher power
and divine intervention.
