many unforeseeable
circumstances and pitfalls that
lay in wait at the beginning of your
life’s journey. To be spared all the needless
pain and confusion. These concerns
somehow seem to be the underlying
message in the beautiful figurative works,
skillfully presented, by young upcoming
contemporary figurative painter Yuki
Tham. Born in Gemas, Johor, 23 year
old Tham’s interest in art started young
and was strengthened further while
she pursued her art education in Kuala
Lumpur. Tham, who graduated with a

of Art, cites the works of contemporary
painter Chong Ai Lei as one of her
pivotal influences. Chong, who was her
senior from the same academy, exploded
prominently onto the local art scene with
powerfully suggestive works beautifully
rendered in almost monochromatic tones,
which subtly
accentuated the
erotic atmosphere
of her subject matter.
Tham finds herself
easily inspired by daily
life and also from reading.
Being part of the younger
generation, it should come as no
surprise that she gets inspiration from
social media as well.
A winning formula
Having been on the scene since 2013,
Tham continues to participate in numer-
ous competitions and exhibitions. To date,
she has won the Silver Award from the
UOB Painting of the Year (2014) competi-
tion, under the Emerging Artist Category,
