Beware the Krampus
Children in Austria fear the Krampus, a
Christmas devil (half-goat, half-demon)
who whips children unless they are well-
behaved. During the season, men dress
up as the Krampus and roam the streets,
scaring the little ones.
In re-
cent years they have tried to soften the
image by selling chocolates and collectible
horns too!
Breaking and entering
Christmas is marked in Mexico with a
parade through the streets as Mary and
Joseph search for shelter in a re-enactment
of the events of the Bible. Once the
unsuccessful search is completed,
plates are smashed to signify the end
of another year.
Shoe throwing
During the Christmas season in the Czech
Republic, unmarried women will stand
with their back to the door and throw a shoe
over their shoulder to discover the future of
their love life. It’s believed that if the shoe
lands pointing towards the door, the thrower
will marry before the next Christmas.
Fireflyz wishes you a very merry Christ-
mas however you celebrate!
