Art Of Faizal Suhif
Nature speaks through the art of this experimental artist.

ne
cannot help but
wonder if the beauti-
ful organic looking
marks, textures and
patterns had been
shaped by the natural
elements, as though
it were Mother Nature herself painting
on the papers and canvases of multidis-
ciplinary artist, Faizal Suhif. The 31 year
graduate fromUiTM (Universiti Teknologi
MARA) majored in printmaking and later
obtained his post graduate degree from
the same institution.
Faizal, who hails from Muar, Johor,
has loved art since his primary school
days and was encouraged to pursue art
formally by the senior artists and art
teachers in the Seni Warisan Johor art
group which he, the youngest member
at that time, joined in 2001. A practising
printmaker, Faizal cites Juhari Said, the
country’s foremost print-maker. as a
pivotal influence. It is from this senior
artist that Faizal learnt that besides pas-
sion, one must also have discipline to
be a printmaker in Malaysia, where the
number of practitioners has always been
smaller compared to painters. This is
due to the high costs required to set up
and maintain a basic print studio, which
would include an array of tools, etching
press, paints and chemicals for different
types of printing, which has discouraged
many young printmakers in the past from
pursuing their practice fully. However,
