The Truth About Coconut Water
M
alaysians
have long enjoyed the cooling sweetness of coconut
water, but in recent years the rest of the world has started
to embrace the refreshing drink with extraordinary gusto,
praising it for health-giving properties. Is this just another
case of the Western world getting a little carried away with
an idea, or is there any truth in the claim that water from the
weighty fruit (it’s not actually a nut) could do our bodies
some serious good?
As with all health-food crazes, there is some truth in the hype, but the benefits do
not match the broad, sweeping claims. That said, there are benefits to your body for
choosing coconut water over other drinks. Read on and decide for yourself
whether coconut water will become your new star beverage.
Smart ‘soft’ choice
If you are seeking a non-water way to quench your thirst,
coconut water is certainly a better option than other soft drinks
on the market. It’s natural, free from additives and artificial
sweeteners, as well as being low fat and cholesterol free.
Digestive diva
Coconut water is high in fibre, so can be a good aid in digestion,
preventing indigestion and reducing acid reflux.
Sports drink
Gym bunnies are always glugging drinks to ease their work out, and
coconut water represents a good alternative to many sports drinks
on the market. Dubbed ‘nature’s isotonic’, coconut water provides
the electrolytes that athletes seek to help
rehydrate their bodies, with one study
suggesting it can lead to less nausea and
bloating than artificial sports drinks.
Rehydrate
There is no doubt that coconut water
is a good choice for anyone needing to
rehydrate, providing electrolytes and
sugars that will make you feel better if
you have been too long in the sun or
are suffering from dehydration-related
ailments. That said, water is still excellent
for rehydration, so don’t stop drinking
that!
Eat less
Due to its rich flavour, drinking coconut
water can work to suppress the appetite,
which can be a useful aid for those trying
to maintain or lose weight.
Be aware
Drink from fresh coconuts wherever
possible. If you grab a pre-packed drink,
check if they contain added sugar or
pulp – to maximise the benefits you want
to avoid anything but 100%pure coconut
water. Coconut water contains high
levels of potassium so should be avoided
by those on a low-potassium diet or if you
have heart or kidney disease.
