• The flight time from Kuala Lumpur
to Prague is just over 12 hours but
there are currently no direct flights so
travellers are advised to connect in any
number of European cities nearby.
• The official language is Czech, spoken
by around 96% of the population –
some of the older people may speak
Russian or German. English is widely
spoken in tourist areas.
• Prague is hilly and many pavements
are cobbled, so wear comfortable
shoes.
• Be careful of pickpockets in crowded
tourist areas and when taking taxis
ensure a price is agreed in advance or
the meter is used.
all that sight-seeing and culture, it’s time
for some sustenance! As withmany of the
Eastern European countries, Czech cuisine
is of the rich, heavy kind, with meat
(usually pork or beef) amain focus, paired
with lots of dumplings and potatoes to
wash everything down. Dessert continues
the indulgent theme – a must-eat are the
Czech pancakes that come filledwith fruit,
jamor ice creamand toppedwithwhipped
cream and almonds
Beer is a big deal in Prague – some say it
is the world’s best – and those enthusiastic
about their brews can visit a historic
beer hall to enjoy the full experience. U
Medvidku is a great place to go to enjoy a
drink and bask in over 550 years of history.
For those in need of green space and an
escape from the city (which can be busy
with tourists in summer), look no further
than Petrin Hill, which is reached by
funicular railway climbing the 300m from
Ujezd. The Hill boasts the largest green
space in the city and a gaggle of quirky
sights, from a miniature Eiffel Tower and
a 17th century wooden church that was
relocated from a village in the Ukraine.
As if the history, culture and cuisine
were not enough tomake Prague a perfect
holiday destination, the city is easy to navi-
gate (you can walk almost everywhere)
and cheap to move through, with food,
drink and entry ticket prices lower than
you pay inmany of the other top European
cities. It is also easily accessible by train as
well as plane, so worth adding into a tour
of Europe for a taste of the past as well as
the contemporary present.
