Malaysian shining star
Poova
talks to
Hannef
Esquander
about her journey to being an award-
winning singer.
P
oova
fell in love with music the moment she heard her mother
singing nursery rhymes to her as a baby. The Kuala Lumpur-born
soul singer has since perfected her craft by taking up local gigs
around the city to very positive reviews which subsequently led
to the release of her debut album,
Ticket to Faketown
. With her
distinctive vocals and genuine song-writing ability, Poova has
captured the heart of local urban music fans and now plotting a
mainstream takeover with her original sound.
Are you talented?
“It can be quite difficult to get signed if you want to write independently and
you don’t have a mass worthy product. However, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t
talented. You are just outside the scope of the label’s ‘menu’. If you don’t mind
the label writing, producing, managing and directing you, then it’s probably easier
to get signed,” explains Poova, when asked about her plan to go mainstream.
