Kelantan:Nasi Tumpang
Kelantan is known for its local food with heavy Thai
influence.
Nasi Tumpang
is one of its most well-known
rice dishes. It is basically rice with different layer of dishes
wrapped in a cone-shaped banana leaf. In the olden days,
Nasi Tumpang
was staple food for travellers or farmers to
take to work. The banana leaf cone is packed tightly with
omelette, beef or fish floss, shrimp or fish curry, together
with sweet sambal gravy and cucumbers.
Johor: Laksa Johor
Laksa
is another dish with different
variations across the country.
Laksa
Johor
is special for its use of spaghetti
noodles instead of the usual rice noodles.
The gravy is also thicker. It is made from
fish and prawn meat, local spices and
chilli.
Laksa Johor
is usually served on
special occasions and is rarely available
at restaurants or street food stalls due to
its preparation method that requires a lot
of ingredients and lengthy cooking time.
So if you do get an opportunity to have
some, do not miss out!
Selangor: Sate Kajang
Satay
is a type of street food that can be found all across the country.
The barbequed meat chunks on skewers are commonly eaten with
nasi impit
(rice cubes) as well as sliced onions and cucumber. The
spicy nut sauce gives satay its distinctive taste.
Sate Kajang
, (taken
from the town of its origin in Selangor), is the most popular due to
its wide meat variations that include chicken, beef, fish, mutton,
chicken liver, beef tripe, venison and rabbit. Even though there are
local chains of restaurant selling
Sate Kajang
, nothing compares
to enjoying the satay at the original location where it first became
famous.
