Did You Know…?
According to various research
projects and surveys:
We tend to spend more money
when it is sunny.
People are more generous and
helpful when it is sunny.
There is more violent crime when
the temperature rises.
Temperate climates- not very
high or very low temperatures-
tend to make for the happiest
people.
Warm climates contribute
towards a lower risk of death
than colder ones.
Temperature
Cold weather has quite a big impact on
the way our bodies are working, requir-
ing more of our energy to be directed
towards keeping the body warm and
therefore making us feel lethargic and
tired. We also tend to eat more when
it is cold, so the body has to use even
more energy in digesting the extra food.
Our immune systems find the cold
difficult too, which makes it more likely
for us to get ill, and illness makes us
miserable! The cold weather also means
we sleep more lightly and so are not
getting as much rest, which can leave
a feeling of tiredness. There is an easy
solution for all of this. Keep yourself
warm and snug, and eat lots of fruits and
vegetables to give your immune system
a helping hand!
Humidity
When conditions are very humid, there
is a higher risk of infection as the humid-
ity is perfect for bacteria and fungi to
breed. The humidity also affects people
with respiratory problems, such as
asthma. All this can combine to make us
feel more tired in the humidity because
our immune systems are trying to fight
off the increase in potential sources
of infection, and tiredness makes us
unhappy.
Rain
Rain does not actually have any nega-
tive impact on our bodies, it simply
makes life a bit more difficult, which
serves to bring down our moods. Rain
may prevent activities we enjoy, make
us feel cold, force us to drive or take
public transport when we do not want
to, and do not forget the traffic jams!
Rain makes us want to stay inside more
often, missing out on sunlight and social
interaction, both of which are mood
enhancers.
