Satay Celup
At anytime of the day, Capitol Satay,
one of Malacca’s most famous
satay
celup
outlets is packed to the brim.
It is normal to see people lining up
for hours just to get a seat inside this
famous joint.
Very similar in concept to having
a steamboat meal,
satay celup
or
steamboat
satay
as it is also known,
is a dish where different types of
ingredients are added on skewers and
dipped into a big pot of peanut gravy,
which locals refer to as
satay
sauce.
The types of ingredients available
include seafood, meat, and a variety
of vegetables. Customers can choose
their own ingredients from the variety
available in each
satay celup
outlet.
Prices start as low as RM0.60 per
ingredient, and be sure to order a
cooling drink to wash down all those
hot and spicy flavours. Try a Chinese
herbal tea, or even better – coconut
water.
Capitol Satay is located in Bukit
Cina, Malacca.
Chicken Rice Balls
Another must-try in Malacca are the
chicken rice balls. Traditionally cooked
the same way original Hainanese
chicken rice is, the uniqueness here lies
in its rice, which is served in nice bite-
sized, well-formed balls. The rice balls
are soft and well cooked, and instantly
break when you bite into them. To
complement the rice is steamed chicken
in soya-sauce with condiments of chilly
and vinegar sauce as accompaniments.
This is a local favourite, and shops
open as early as 8am (yes, you can
even have chicken rice balls for
breakfast in Malacca!).
Three top spots to try authentic
chicken rice
balls in Malacca
are Chung Wah
Coffee Shop in
Jonker Street,
Famosa Chicken
Rice Balls and
Huang Chang
Chicken Rice
Restaurant in
Batu Berendam.
Pak Putra’s
Naan &
Tandoori
Pak Putra in Jalan
Laksamana is a
well-known local
food institution,
especially among
the younger
generation of
Malacca. If
you’re a big fan of
tandoori
and
naan
,
then this is the place to be. Freshly
baked varieties of
naan
are ready to be
served up for dinner, as Pak Putra only
operates in the evenings till just after
midnight. Apart from the signature
tandoori
and
naan
, the restaurant also
offers various other dishes, all of which
are worth trying.
The place is always packed, so it’s
not unusual for customers to show up
early, before 8pm to ensure they have a
spot to sit. Their
naan
really stands out,
and are much bigger in size than those
served in Kuala Lumpur generally. Be
sure to try the pizza
naan
for a burst of
flavours.
Chendol
If you’re looking for a place to cool
down in the sweltering heat, try some
chendol
, a mouthwatering traditional
Malaysian dessert made of coconut
milk, jelly noodles, palm sugar and
shaved ice. This is a big favourite across
all states, but Malacca easily has some
of the best offerings in the country.
Other ingredients that are included
are red beans, grass jelly, glutinous
rice and creamed corn. This dish is a
popular hit with many locals, and some
of the best places to try some really
good chendol in Malacca include Bukit
Rambai, Batu Berendam and along
Jonker Street.
