Nyonya Laksa
A unique aspect of Malacca is its
culture and influence, which reflects
its stronghold in the long history of the
state. It is no wonder then, that there
are localised versions of
laksa
, such as
Nyonya Laksa
.
Nyonya Laksa
uses fresh, thick rice
noodles as its main ingredient. The
coconut curry is similar to the soup but
the similarity ends there as the curry
is made of spice paste, pounded dried
shrimps, coconut milk, chicken broth
and
pandan
leaves primarily.
The curry is just added onto the
noodles and sprinkled with a generous
amount of tofu, bean sprouts, fish
cakes, hard boiled eggs, and also
prawns. If you’re feeling a little
adventurous, add some chilli sauce to
your bowl for a nice kick of spice.
In traditional
Nyonya Laksa
, a little
lime juice and Vietnamese mint is also
added to the soup.

Everyone has heard of

Well, you can find one right in Malacca

Roti canai
, or flaky pancakes is
the English translation for it, is one of
the must-haves anywhere in Malaysia.
This makes for a staple breakfast food
in Malaysia with an accompanying cup

teh-tarik
.
Roti canai
can be made just plain,
or with egg, planta, sugar, onion, and
cheese, among a host of many other
ingredients.
The flying
roti canai
in Malacca is
where one can witness how the
roti
is
made, and thrown to ‘fly’ in the air, as
the maker allows the bread to even out
and spread to a desired thickness. The
bread is turned and spun, much to the
delight of customers.
Banana Leaf Rice
From our hunt, the best banana leaf
rice meal that Malacca has to offer is
found in two restaurants, Selvam and
Veni Restaurant. Banana leaf rice is
a traditional Indian rice meal that is
served with vegetables and meat dishes
on a freshly cut banana leaf.
These two restaurants top Malacca’s
list of Indian restaurants, simply due
to their home cooked meal styles. Veni
Restaurant has received rave reviews
for its chicken and mutton

dishes, as well as its vegetarian fare.
Customers just have to eat off the
banana leaf, and once completed the
leaf is folded towards the front (facing
the patron), to signify a fulfilling meal.
Wash down all the spices with a cup

that has many healing and medicinal
properties.
Oysters

are fresh and provided in generous

cooked with noodles or fried with egg

crabs, which are served as crispy deep
fried starters.
Portuguese Devil Curry
The Portuguese community has a
significant role in Malaccan history,
and it takes great pride in ensuring their
roots and traditions stay unchanged
even to this day. Portuguese dishes
are incredibly mouthwatering, and
one of their most famous dishes, the
Portuguese Devil Curry, can be found
right here at the Portuguese Settlement
of Malacca.
In actual fact, the real name of the
dish is
debal
curry. It is known to be
one of the most sought after dishes,
especially among visitors to Malacca.
What makes this curry stand apart
from others is the fact that it uses
vinegar instead of coconut milk, which
gives the curry its signature tangy taste.
Traditionally, the curry uses wild boar
meat as its main ingredient. However
today, many have modified the recipe
for chicken or other types of meat.
Devil curry is best served after it
is left to sit overnight, as this allows
all the different flavours to blend in
properly. They say that the longer the
curry is kept, the better it tastes; much
like wine!
