This museum is the first of its kind
in Malaysia and has been specially
curated to illustrate Penang’s history and
culture through the use of teddy bears
in very cleverly created scenes. There
are dioramas that depict Sir Francis
Light’s arrival at Penang as well as others
that show the various festivals that are
celebrated on the island.
When fully operational, the museum
will house over 1000 bears with a vintage
collection of the world’s first teddy bears
to modern day life-sized bears. Visitors
will also have the opportunity to build
their own bears.
Up The Hill
Taking a trip up Penang Hill in the
funicular train is always fun, and the
top of the hill offers cooler weather and
absolutely stunning panoramic views of
the island. There is now another reason
to go up that hill. The Habitat Penang
Hill is a place that Nature lovers should
visit.
Located a few minutes walk from
the top station, The Habitat is set on a
historical site and promotes the natural
beauty of the wildlife of Penang Hill.
There are various trails for all ages
and fitness levels and the trails are
wheelchair and stroller friendly.
It is hard for me to describe the
beauty of this place. Trees, flowers and
plants everywhere. Colour explosions.
Butterflies lazing through the air.
Dr. Hew Kuan Yau is the curator of
the museum and he had this to say,
“The three key points of this museum
are simple. It is here to educate, entertain
and to enrich the visitors.” All the art-
work that is displayed here are original
pieces and each section chronicles the
history and evolution of the respective
country’s comics from the 1950s to the
2010s.
The more than 8,000 comic books
and artworks are displayed along the
walls and in display cabinets and all the
information about what you are seeing
is presented in four languages, English,
Malay, Tamil and Chinese.
Beary Good
Teddy bears are cute and adorable and
the TeddyVille Museum, located in the
soon to be completed DoubleTree Resort
by Hilton, is filled with them. Legend has
it that the first teddy bear was named
after the 26th United States president,
Theodore Roosevelt. His refusal to shoot
an old bear that was tied to a tree
during a hunting trip in 1920, and the
subsequent press about this event led
to the creation of two stuffed bears that
were called “Teddy’s bears”. They proved
to be so popular that German company
Steiff started producing stuffed bears and
calling them Teddy Bears as well.
