Langkawi Wildlife Park & Bird Paradise
The Wildlife Park & Bird Paradise is the first and largest covered wildlife park in
Asia and is home to over 2,500 birds that have really made the area their home as
they fly, hop and even swim over and around the park.
The park was officially launched in 2002. It is a beautiful garden that homes over
2,500 exotic birds such as canaries, owls, eagles, toucans, hornbills and flamingos.
The park also features a walk-in aviary with a 15m man-made waterfall. Originally
named “The Bird Paradise”, the name was later changed to “Langkawi Wildlife
Park & Bird Paradise.
The change was necessary as the park is not just home to birds but also to various
other species there such as crocodiles, pythons, donkeys, raccoons and monkeys.
Taman Lagenda (Lagenda Park)
This park’s theme is that of being a park of legends. It was opened in 1996 and is
located next to Eagle Square in Kuah. The 50 hectare compound has a total of 17
colourful sculptures depicting Langkawi legends including legends of heroic giants,
mythical birds, evil ogres and beautiful princesses.
Some of the archipelago’s best known tales are displayed here, like the story of
the duel between two giants, Matchinchang and Raya, which explains the origins
of the names of some of the island’s better known natural attractions. Legend
has it that Matchincang and Raya duelled and overturned a pot of gravy. The
resulting spillage led to their incarceration as mountains and Kuah (the Malay
word for gravy) was born. Taman Lagenda has beautiful gardens with bright local
flowers, lush plants and fruit trees.
The rambling garden is a marvelously
landscaped recreational strip where you
can find traditional Malaysian handicraft
and cultural objects on display. At the
entrance of the park is Gondwana
Wall – a mountainous formation to the
south west of Langkawi, which towers
over Burau Bay.
Dataran Lang (Eagle Square)
Dataran Lang, literally the Eagle Square,
is the very first landmark that is seen
by visitors who arrive on the ferry to
Langkawi. Located next to Lagenda Park
near Kuah Jetty, the square boasts of a
wonderful statue of a reddish brown
eagle all geared for a flight.
As Langkawi is the land of numerous
legends and mysteries, this eagle also
has a story attached to its presence.
According to local folklore, the name
Langkawi is derived from two different
words ‘Lang’ or ‘Helang’ (meaning
eagle) and ‘Kawi’ (meaning reddish
brown). For this reason, Langkawi
means reddish brown eagle, and the
island is marked by its presence.
The square has beautiful landscapes
with ponds, bridges and covered ter-
races. The areas also has numerous
souvenir outlets and eateries so one
can have delicious food while enjoying
the sight of the eagle brilliantly lit up
at night.
The island of Langkawi has so much
more to offer than just diving and duty
free goods. Spend some time exploring
the island and be surprised at what you
will find.
