Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga
The former Atlectic Bilbao defender keeps the pair of
boots he wore to break Deigo Maradona’s ankle in a 1983
inside a glass case at his house. When asked about the
boots, he would say: “That was the boot I used to crock
the great Diego!”
Pepe
A defender who is probably crazy and very hot tempered
he is famous for his fights and tackles that break legs. In
the 2014 World Cup, he earned a red card after head-
butting Thomas Muller, leaving a bigger gap in Portugal’s
ever leaking defence.
Kevin Muscat
Kevin Muscat would serve a prison term if the tackles
he made were outside the playing field. In 1996, the
Australian was sent off in his first season in England
after a body check on Norwich City’s Darren Eadie,
which then sparked a 21 man melee. Some of the tackles
he made had nothing to do with playing football. Ameri-
can football would have been a more suitable option for
Muscat.
Luis Suarez
The Uruguayan has made as many headlines with his
mesmerising skills and his eye for the goal, but more
recently for his eye on Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.
He apologised to Chiellini, but do not be fooled, as you
are more likely to be bitten by Suarez than by a shark.
Diego Costa
From stomping on Emre Can and Martin Skrtel, to
elbowing Mohammed Sissoko, this guy is madness in
the making. He arrived from Spain seemingly with more
emotional than real baggage, coming to a league that
was used to the hot-head striker narrative thanks to the
bull-in-a-chinashop carnage left behind by Luis Suarez
when he jumped ship to Barcelona.
Joey Barton
In the final day of the 2012 EPL season, Joey Barton was
awarded a red card after elbowing Carlos Tevez, kicking
Sergio Aguero and trying to headbutt Vincent Kompany.
Over the years, the irascible Englishman has been in and
out of prison for assault.
Lee Bowyer
When the former Newcastle United player’s name is
mentioned, it is in the same breath as his punch-up
with Kieran Dyer in an EPL match against Aston Villa.
Bowyer remains the most booked player of all time in the
Premier League with 98 cautions to his name.
Dennis Wise
A member of the ‘Crazy Wimbledon Gang’, Wise was
a talented footballer, but had his share of disciplinary
issues on and off the pitch. Sir Alex Ferguson was once
quoted as saying, “Wise could start a fight in an empty
room!”
Paul Gascoigne
Burping on TV, drinking, bar fights or playing a mock
flute in the heat of an Old Firm game, the legendary
English midfielder had as many memorable moments
without the ball at his feet as he did dribbling through
defenders.
Roy Keane
His temper led to many red cards and enemies for the
most influential captain of Manchester United’s history.
Keane is well known for his never ending feud with
Patrick Veira and for twice taking out the knee of former
Manchester City player Alf-Inge Haland.
