Round 2
I was hoping that Tan had picked a pork dish for us to
try and I was not disappointed. The
Pork Knuckle with
Sweet & Sour Sauce
was, to me, the winning dish that we
tried that evening. The meat is braised for three hours
and fried to order. Doused with sweet and sour sauce,
I can only describe each joyous mouthful as “a party
in my mouth.” Corny but true. The crunchy skin, the
tender meat under, the flavour combinations of sweet
and sour. Outstanding!
Pineapple Fried Rice, Stuffed Squid
and
Fried Tempura
were the next knockouts that were served. The
Pineapple
Fried Rice
is served in a pineapple that has been halved
and the flesh scooped out to create a hollow. The rice
has a very distinct flavour as it is fried in turmeric, with
pieces of luncheon meat thrown in.
The
Stuffed Squid
packs a lot of delicious flavours,
with prawns, minced pork, salt, pepper and fish oil
ground up and stuffed in the squid. This dish has amaz-
ingly rich flavours and is another one that will make you
reach for more.
Fried Tempura Kangkung
, another simple dish that
was easy to eat. Tempura stacked on a plate, servedwith a
sauce that combines peanuts, chilli and cucumber. I spent
most of the evening trying to convince Tan to bottle this
sauce as well as their seafood sauce, which is a beautiful
combination of garlic, red and green chillis, lime and
fish sauce. I am pretty sure that he was ignoring me …
The food was not fussy, the flavours rustic but
delicious and the outlet an intimate place to dine, with
very reasonable prices. Parking may prove to be slightly
challenging, but it really is worth the effort.
Round 1
First out was the
Salt & Pepper Squid
,
which as the name implies, was squid
that was seasoned with salt and pepper
and deep fried to perfection. Nothing
fancy on this dish, just clean simple
flavours with a great crunch. Delicious
and very hard to stop eating.
The
Steamed Fish with Chili and Lime
was next, served on a heated metal plate
to ensure that the gravy and fish stayed
hot. Steamed sea bass, marinated with
chilli and lime. Crisp, clean flavours
and tender fish meat. Truly a winning
combination. The lime was a good palate
cleanser as well, which paved the way
for the …
Crispy Omelette
. Such a simple
dish but one that had to be pried away
from me so that the others could get a
taste. The omelette was crispy, with the
added dimension of being stuffed with
Cha-Om
, which is a delicious herb-like
vegetable.
