heads toAli, Muthu&AhHock, a kopitiam(coffee-shop) inKuala Lumpur’s
Chinatown, which personifies the local melting pot. A signboard at the entrance
welcomes visitors in three languages–Malay, Chinese and Tamil. Started by three
friends, Ernest Ong, Colin Soh andBruceWong, the outlet is cosy, ideal to escape the
enervating humidity or bustling street outside.

a restored
pre-war shophouse,
the rustic interior,
which is very similar
to village stalls, harks
back to simpler times.
Nostalgia lies in the
use of 1960s-style furnishings such as
benches, long tables, marble top tables
and food display cases. The eatery even
sells antiques from the 50s, while piped
multilingual 60s and 70s songs heighten
the retro vibe.

Affordable local delights served in gener-
ous portions are main highlights here. Try
the
chee cheong fun
(flat-rice noodles),
mee goreng mamak
(spicy fried noodles)
or
nasi goreng
(fried rice). A must-try is
nasi lemak ayam berempah
, the outlet’s
most popular item enjoyed by all races.
The coconut flavoured rice, two large
pieces of mildly spiced fried chicken, fried
peanuts, fried anchovies and a large dol-
lop of spicy
sambal
, make a hearty meal.
Also irresistible are
mee soto
, a Java-
nese (Indonesian) noodle dish served
withmildly spicy chicken broth, shredded
chicken meat and a fried potato cutlet;
and curry chicken that comes with soft
white bread – perfect for dipping to enjoy
the spicy gravy. Savour these treats,
which give you insight into the local
culinary traditions.
This is a great place to head to for
food that isn’t too complicated and fussy,
with an atmosphere that just allows one
to relax and unwind. Get some friends
together and make the trip.
