segment sedans are offering more; even
a budget A-segment sedan tops this by 20
liters. On the bright side, it comes with a
retractable screen to hide contents from
prying eyes and there is also plenty of
storage within the cabin.
The Drivetrain
The 2-liter Nu engine is carried over
from the previous generation. Paired
with a 6-speed automatic transmission,
the powerplant produces 155 PS and 192
NMof torque. Not exceptional figures but
enough to get you places.
The gears shift smoothly up or down
and power delivery isn’t deficient as
long as you are in Normal or Sports
modes. It becomes laidback in Eco mode
but your wallet will be happy with the
fuel savings. In fully urban driving, I
managed 10.2l/100km on mostly Eco
driving which is commendable for an
SUV. A long distance highway cruise
brought that down to
8l/100km.
rear air vents, cruise control, powered
driver’s seat, LED daytime running lights,
puddle lamps, keyless entry, push button
start, Safe Drive video recorder and
reverse camera.
Furthermore, the Tucson is the only
small SUV in its category to receive
a ‘Good’ rating in the US Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Small
Overlap Crash Test for Driver and Pas-
senger.
In Conclusion
It may not be an inspiring drive but the
locally assembled Tucson is a smooth,
practical machine and represents good
value. This is where it excels because
buyers of SUVs aren’t (and shouldn’t
be) looking for speed and sports-car
handling. Plainly put, it’s built right.
The Drive
T h e r e ’ s n o
adrenaline rush
with the Tucson
despite the sporty
look. However,
it’s not lethargic
either. It serves
to carry its occupants around in a most
competent and comfortable way and it
does that well with little complaint.
Even with all-wheel drive, which this
doesn’t come with, most Tucson owners
would not take it to any place extreme
other than up a curb or a grassy trail
on the way to a picnic. The Tucson will
spend most of its life on the tarmac doing
the office commute, school or mall runs,
in a refined and comfortable manner.
Even at highway speeds, there is minimal
noise intrusion until you are way above
the speed limit.
But if you wish to misbehave with the
Tucson, you’ll be glad to know that it is
backed by a Vehicle Stability Manage-
ment system with Electronic Stability
Control, ABS, Brake Assist and 6 airbags.
The Features
The Tucson has a Downhill
Brake Control where, at the
push of the button, it takes
control of the throttle to help
you descend steep slopes
safely. Not quite necessary
for the urban warrior but it
is nice to have.
Other features an urban
warrior will look for are also
available (in Executive trim),
including auto headlamps,
